With competition paused for Christmas 2019, we have 6 of our 12 teams in the top 4 of their various divisions.
Best placed in 2nd position are our White team in Women's mid-week Division 2, and our Men's Division 3/4 team on Saturday afternoon.
Look at the details on our Competitive page.

All members and friends are welcome: male or female, social or competition players.
Balmy 25 degrees is forecast, so bring your racquets for a friendly hit.
BYO meat, salad & soft drinks for BBQ. Buy alcoholic drinks at our bar.

Competition gets underway for 2019-2020! Sturt has 12 teams.
We have 3 teams this year in the Women's Mid-week competition which started Thursday 17th October.
One Men's and one Ladies' team in the Metro Saturday Afternoon competitions starting 19th October.
7 teams in Saturday Morning Men's competition starting 26th October - 5 regular teams and 2 doubles-only.

New President, Secretary, Treasurer etc for 2019-2020
At our AGM on Tuesday 3rd September we revitalised our Committee by electing several new members to key roles.

Bernard Doube is promoted from Vice President to President, with James Chataway joining the committee as Vice President. Tristan Sudholz is our new Secretary, with John O'Connor as Treasurer, and Steve Smith as Maintenance Officer.

Continuity and stability is ensured with some office-bearers keeping their roles: Mike Jones is Men's Captain, Lindy McNamara is Women's Captain, David Bates is Bar Manager, and Bobbie Barwick is Assistant Secretary.

Many thanks to all these players for volunteering to manage our beautiful Club for the coming year!

GRAND FINAL WIN for Sturt Ladies Doubles Team
Our Ladies Division-1 team defeated the combined Drive / Reade Park team in the Grand Final at Tranmere on 6th April without losing a set.
Congratulations to Paula Brinkworth, Sophie James, Lindy McNamara and Catherine Tilley - as well as all other members who played matches during the 2018-19 season.

"Fast-4" doubles at 6pm Wednesdays
10 players braved adverse weather for the first session on 17th November. Better conditions attracted 16 social and competition players, plus visitors on the 24th. Lots of good tennis and fun! We're looking forward to monthly visits with other clubs. ALL WELCOME!

Great Opening Day on Saturday 6th October
Perfect weather and well-prepared lawn courts attracted about 35 members and friends to start the new season. President John Langford officially declared the 2018-19 season open and introduced his committee. Then lots of enjoyable tennis along with a sausage sizzle and drinks from the bar.

AGM elects new President and Men's Captain
On 21st August 2018 about 20 members met to review last season and plan for 2018-19.
John Langford was elected President, allowing Joel Kass to step down after 4 years at the helm.
Mike Jones is our new Men's Captain, relieving Kym Thornton who can now concentrate on his executive role with Saturday Morning Men's Lawn Tennis Association.
Many thanks to Joel and Kym for their leadership over many years.

Sturt wins 4 pennants for 2017-2018 season
Congratulations to all our team members!
  • Saturday Morning Men's Division 2
  • Saturday Morning Men's Division 4
  • Saturday Morning Men's Doubles-Only Division D2
  • Mid-Week Women's Division 4
Ladies hit the 2017-2018 season with a WIN
Competition tennis started on Saturday Afternoon 14th October:
    * Our Ladies Doubles team scored a home-court win against Reade Park
    * Our Men's Div3/4 also played at home against Reade Park and lost
            a close one - 3 sets all, 7 sets all, 45 games to 51.

AGM held 21st August 2017
24 men and women members braved the wintry conditions to set the Club's course for the 2017-2018 season, as well as enjoying each other's company with lots of nibbles, red wine and sparkling.
The official reports showed that we more or less broke even financially last year, with the help of substantial donations. We had 10 competiton teams playing in the 2016-17 season and we congratulate one of our Saturday Morning Men's doubles teams for winning their grand final. Other teams played lots of good tennis, without finishing on top.
We elected a new Vice-President: Bernard Doube has been a regular social player for many years, particularly with the Thursday evening group, but more recently has played competitively on Saturday afternoons as well. Most other committee members were re-elected to the same roles.
The Club expects to nominate the same number of teams again in 4 competitions: Mid-week Women on Thursday mornings, Saturday morning Men, Metro Women on Saturday afternoon, and Metro Men on Saturday afternoon.

16th October 2016 - Opening Day for 2016-2017
Disgusting wet and cold weather in September has delayed the preparation of Adelaide's best courts.
Our courts will be in great condition when we eventually open the new season from 1pm on Sunday 16th October. All members should join us to play tennis, enjoy Rob's BBQ and Bar, and plan for premierships!

15th August 2016 - Annual General Meeting
About 18 members enjoyed Rob's sandwiches, pies & pasties with wine & beer, before the meeting.
The outgoing office-bearers reported on a fairly good year for our 10 teams with one premiership. Financially we broke even, but need to do a little better next season to extinguish our modest debt. The best way to achieve that would probably be another 8 or 10 social members, so please invite your friends to join!
Most committee members were re-elected. Sean Kennedy retired after 5 years sterling service as Assistant Secretary, with Bobbie Barwick elected to fill that role, as well as continuing as vice president.
Lindy McNamara joins our committee as Ladies' Captain - contact Lindy if you want to play in either the Thursday morning mid-week competition or Saturday afternoon Metro competition.

24th April 2016 - Doubles Club Championships
George Curtis & Paul Stanley are our Men's Doubles Champions.

The Mixed Doubles Champions are Annette Wessling & Antony Peciulis (Petch).

14th April 2016 - Mid-week Women's Teams BOTH played Finals
Unfortuately both Sturt's teams (Div 2 & 4) lost their Grand Finals on Thursday 14th April.
Congratulations to all players for doing so well this season.

3rd April 2016 - Men's Singles Club Championship
Justin Tscharke is our new men's Singles Champion.
Congratulations on defeating Nathan Pepper in a tough final.
The youngest player in the tournament, Justin has been winning many matches this season for our Division-2 team. Even though still at high-school, he is currently ranked 470 in Australia - and we all hope his star continues to climb!
Peter Bulman won the Plate competiton by defeating Chris Slysz.

19th March 2016 - A Pennant in Saturday Morning Competition
Our Division 3 Dark Blue team defeated Xavier White in the Final.
Congratulations to George Curtis, Paul Stanley, Adam Gore, Scott Morgan and Kym Thornton.
Further congratulations to Adam Gore for winning the Association's "Player of the Year" trophy for Division 3.

11th October 2015 - Opening Day for 2015-2016
Members & friends enjoyed lots of tennis on a beautiful Spring day.
Rob Slade cooked delicious steak, sausages and onions to accompany his selection of fresh salads, and we sampled his new beers and wines. The courts are in great condition, and our clubrooms have been refreshed with a new coat of paint provided by Unley Council.

18th August 2015 - Annual General Meeting
About 25 members heard President Joel Kass report the highs and lows of 2014-2015: 4 premierships (2 women's and 2 men's), a new sprinkler system connected to cheap recycled water, a creative accounting profit but a cash deficit. We re-elected the same committee members, but David Bates and John Langford swapped roles. David is now Secretary & John is Maintenance Officer. Rob Slade provided excellent nibbles and wine. A very friendly evening!

19th April 2015 - Men's Championship Tournament
Our new Men's Champion is Alfredo Apelaniz, a relatively new member of Tristan's Division 5 team. About 20 men enjoyed a long day of doubles and singles tennis. Many thanks to Kym Thornton & Joel Kass for organising the event, and Rob Slade for the BBQ lunch..

18th April 2015 - TWO Premierships for Sturt's Men!
Our new Division-2 team won their Final at home on 18th April against Reade Park. In Division-3 our Light Blue team travelled to Woodville where they defeated Woodville-Glengarry. Both matches were extremely close, ending 3 rubbers each, 9 sets each and Sturt winning on games. Congratulations to Nathan Pepper, Luke Gray, Matt Pepper & Rowan Roff (Div-2), and Will Metzer, Josh Parham, Michael Pipinias, Andrew Sabatino & Andy Murray (Div-3).

26th March 2015 - Triumphs for Mid-Week Women
Congratulations to both our teams, Division 2 and Division 4, which each won their Mid-Week Finals! Sue Hicks won the trophy for being the best player in Division 2.

4th October 2014 - Opening Day
About 30 members and friends enjoyed tennis on our excellent lawn courts.
Rob's BBQ steaks and sausages were delicious, along with his salads and a great selection of beers, wines and soft drinks from the bar.
Now we can all enjoy social tennis on Saturdays, Wednesdays and Thurdays before competition matches start on Thursay 16th. Visitors always welcome (only $15 per day).

28th September 2014 - Working Bee
John Langford & Joel Kass led a small team of members who prepared our club for the new season: bringing out the net posts and checking all 3 sets of holes, greasing the winders, weeding the brick paving, mopping the clubroom floor, cleaning the gutters, testing the fridges, etc. Thanks to Dean Townsend, Rob Slade and Michael Gerrard.
More could have been done with more volunteers: so if you notice anything that still needs cleaning or fixing, please do it yourself promptly.

1st-6th September 2014 - New Watering System Installed
James McDonald worked tirelessly to install pipes, valves and sprinklers for our new system, with assistance from member volunteers: John O'Connor, Sean Kennedy, John Langford, Michael Gerrard, Peter Bulman and Joel Kass.

1st September 2014 - Sturt Nominates 2 Afternoon Teams
Kym Thornton has submitted 2 men's teams for the metropolitan Lawn Tennis competition. This is the first time in many years that Sturt has had any men playing afternoon matches. The Division 3 team (lowest division) includes Michael Gerrard, David Bates, Mike Jones, John Langford and Dean Townsend. Additional players would be welcome, either as regular players or reserves - contact Michael if you are interested.

5th August 2014 - Annual General Meeting
25 members enjoyed drinks and nibbles, and then elected Joel Kass as President, Kym Thornton as Men's Captain, and Trevor Waters as Life Member. Most other committee members were re-elected to their current positions. Joel's financial report showed a small loss for the year. Out-going President Michael Gerrard thanked everyone for contributing to a successful centenary season.

30th July 2014 - $10,000 from Dept of Recreation and Sport
David's application for an ActiveClub grant has been successful! We hope James can install our new sprinkler system and connect to recycled water in time for our summer tennis season in October. We'll need some volunteer labour from our members to keep costs under control, and get the job done in time. Please help.

28th April 2014 - Council votes $5,500 for recycled water for Sturt
A full meeting of Unley Council resolved to support our application to the Office for Recreation by promising to contribute $5,500 if RecSport approves our grant. Maintenance Officer David Bates has worked with Council staff on a $22,000 project to upgrade our watering system to use recycled water on our courts. This could save at least $3,000 each year and give us a greener playing surface. Grants will be announced in July and we could have the new irrigation system installed by Court Curator James McDonald for the start of next season in October. Read the Mayor's letter.

13th April 2014 - Men's Championship Tournament
20 entrants each played 2 sets of doubles (Rounds 1-2), with the "best 16" progressing to the singles section of the tournament (Rounds 3-6). The remaining players competed in the secondary "Plate" competition, along with the 8 losers of Round 3.
CONGRATULATIONS to Pawel Slysz - champion of the 2013-14 season.

12th April 2014 - Division-4 WINS Men's FINAL for Sturt
Our Division-4 team finished the minor rounds in 4th place, defeated Memorial Drive in the semi final, and then Reade Park in the preliminary final. They WON the FINAL against Kensington Gardens.
Our Division-7 team is MINOR PREMIER and defeated Reade Park in the preliminary final. They lost their nail-bitingly close FINAL against Woodville-Glengarry by one set - 3 rubbers all.
Our Division-3 (Dark Blue) team is MINOR PREMIER but lost a close preliminary final against Woodville-Glengarry.

24th November 2013 - Centenary Celebration  Look Back, Play Forward
Sturt Lawn Tennis Club celebrated the foresight of its founding members in 1913. They created a better social and physical environment for Unley residents that has lasted 100 years. What a fantastic achievement!
But that is not the end. The club is growing and planning for the next generation of players, both social and competitive.
More than a hundred past and present members and their families & friends celebrated the inspiration of our founders with fun competitions for all ages, lots of prizes, memorabilia display, a BBQ and celebratory cake. Click here to see who came to enjoy the day.
The City of Unley supported this event financially, and Unley Museum helped with our display.

13th November 2013 - Centenary Article in Messenger
Page 7 of the Eastern Courier features a photo of two members of our new Division-4 team in the Women's Mid-Week competition, with words about our Centenary Celebration Day planned for Sunday 24th November.   Article

19th October 2013 - Men's Club Championship Tournament
24 men competed in perfect weather with 3 sets of doubles in the morning to determine seedings for the knock-out singles in the afternoon. The final saw Will Metzer triumph over his friend Josh Parham to become our first Club Champion since 1999.   Results

5th October 2013 - OPENING DAY!
More than 30 members and visitors enjoyed the perfect weather to play lots of tennis with friends (old & new). And then tested the range of new drinks which Bar-Manager Rob has stocked for our Centenary Season.
Now for some serious practice: the Women's mid-week competition starts on the 17th, and the Men's Club Tournament is on the 19th!

1st October 2013 - Courts are lined and ready for play!
New court curator, James McDonald, has been working hard through his first month with us, and now we can all start playing. Unley Council's arborist has pruned the trees adjacent to courts 3 & 4, and so we hope their northern baselines will soon be as good as the other courts - but best not to play on court 3 too much in October.

22nd September 2013 - Pre-Season Working Bee
9 members spent a couple of hours getting our courts ready for tennis in October. Richard & Bobbie checked the net-post holes, Peter & Sean trimmed the hedge, John L dumped building rubble and painted the gate-posts, John O cleaned the gutters, Dean & David put up the nets and tested the straps, Michael repaired the north eastern wire fence - and most of us evaluated the new beers in the bar. There's still some spring-cleaning required inside the clubrooms before Opening Day on 5th October.

21st April 2013 - Club Championships Washed Out!
Twenty-four men had trained hard through warm, dry April weather. Then the day of the Tournament dawned with cold, steady rain. Great for thirsty gardens and empty rainwater tanks, but very disappointing for the players and organisers.
We hope to conduct both Men's and Ladies' Championships early next season. Our innovative format combining doubles and singles could well be used, but we'd welcome comments on this or alternative formats. Please e-mail Trevor at with your thoughts.

13th April 2013 - Men's Preliminary Finals
Two of our teams earned places in the preliminary finals.
Div-3-Dark-Blue succumbed at Tranmere, while Millswood overcame Div-5-Dark-Blue at Sturt.

4th April 2013 - Mid-Week Women's Semi Finals
Lots of enjoyable tennis, but none of our teams progressed to the finals.
About 15 players enjoyed end-of-season celebrations at our clubrooms in the evening.

26th March 2013 - Club Championships scheduled for 21st April
More than 20 male members have entered for our first club championship this millenium and so the Committee have confirmed this will take place on Sunday 21st April 2013. There aren't yet enough female entries to justify their tournament, but a final decision has been deferred until Friday 5th April. If at least 4 women enter by then, there will be a singles-only ladies' tournament on the same day. The men's format will start with each entrant playing 3 sets of doubles with different randomly allocated partners and opponents to select the final 16 players for knock-out singles finals.

16th March 2013 - Ladies' Preliminary Finals
Our Saturday Afternoon Ladies won their semi-final against Reade Park on 9th March, but couldn't overcome a very strong Woodville-Glengarry team in the preliminary final.
Congratulations on a good season.

2nd March 2013 - Repairs to Clubrooms
Our doors now open without scraping! Soil movement in summer had distorted our southern wall, causing the bottom of our entry doors to scratch the polished floor. Our talented handyman, John Langford (aka Secretary) planed a few millimetres off the bottom and now all is well again. Thank you John.
A few weeks earlier John also earned the nickname Monkey-Man for clambering on top of our roof to paint the gables green. They had been peeling for years and we are delighted to have our roof in pristine condition at last.

3rd February 2013 - Try lawn Tennis for Women
About a dozen women enjoyed developing their tennis skills on our courts in January. Bill Purling provided excellent coaching, with the costs subsidised by a Community Grant from the City of Unley. Some participants are now playing with us regularly. We hope to attract more women if we repeat this project early next season (October-November).

26th October 2012 - PuraTap & More New Shirts
Our kitchen sink now boasts a PuraTap delivering filtered pure water. Thank you to the many Mid-Week Women (and others) who contributed towards the cost, and to Julie Culley & David Bates who made it happen.
Our second batch of new shirts arrived today and can be bought in our clubrooms now - maximum 2 per member @ only $15. The price is so low because it is subsidised by a grant from the Office for Recreation & Sport. If we run out of your size, we can consider getting some more (but at the full cost of $30).

6th October 2012 - Opening Day Success
More than 30 members and visitors enjoyed tennis from 1 o'clock until about 6. Play was interrupted at 2pm when Mayor Lachlan Clyne officially declared the 2012-2013 tennis season "open" by serving a couple of balls to Peter Fountain. Peter is part of our new division-3 team in the Saturday morning competition.
Lots of members wore their newly-purchased blue club shirts and looked even more smart than usual. A good range of sizes is on display in our clubrooms until Sunday 21st October for members to try on and order. Please place your order (on the form in the clubrooms) by that date for delivery by the end of the month.

22nd September 2012 - Working Bee & New Club Shirts
About a dozen members spent 2 hours getting our courts and clubrooms ready for the new season. Our gutters are now leafless, windows are sparkling, net-post holes have been excavated, and the new range of beers has been tested.
There were 5 shirt designs on display and we chose one in light-blue with dark-blue trim for both men and women (with sleeves). There's also a sleeveless top for ladies - white with navy trim, plus our Club logo in blue. At Opening Day you can try them on for size and order your shirt for $15.

14th September 2012 - After-School Coaching in October
The David Sanders Tennis Academy is hiring our courts for at least the first few weeks of the season, while the courts he usually uses are undergoing major renovation.
David and his team of assistant coaches will use all 6 of our courts on Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays from 4 to 5 pm. On other weekdays and after 5pm they may be using up to 3 courts.
Except for his peak times (4-5 on Mon/Tues/Thurs) there will always be at least 3 courts for our members to practise and play on (including all 6 courts from 5pm Thursday for our twilight social players).

7th September 2012 - Design for new Sturt Club Shirts
The Office for Recreation & Sport has awarded us a grant to subsidise the cost of tops with our Club Logo on the chest. Colleen Waterhouse has investigated various designs and the leading contenders will be on display at our Working Bee on Saturday 22nd September. You can help make the final selection at about 10am that morning, and try them on for size.

4th September - Fees for 2012-2013 kept the same
At its first meeting our new committee decided that membership fees will not be increased. They remain at:
  • $350 for Saturday competition players
  • $280 for 7-day social players
  • $220 for mid-week competition and 6-day social players
(can play every day except Saturday)
  • $500 for whole family (parents & children, competition & social)
23rd August 2012 - Annual General Meeting
Highlights were confirmation of two new Life Members, Richard Portus and Rob Slade, and election of 4 new members to the Committee: Julie Culley, John O'Connor, John Langford & Sean Kennedy. See About Us for their details.
